We love magazines: colophon 2009

Andrews:Degen  donderdag 26 maart 2009

The weekend before last the Colophon 2009 took place in the idyllic town of Luxembourg. Colophon is a biennial symposium for magazine makers, experts, advertisers, readers and all creatives involved in the world of the independent magazine. This international event celebrates excellence and innovation, and promotes exchanges between key players within independent magazine industry.

The atmosphere is very relaxed, informal and intimate. You get inspiration and ideas. You can participate or just watch. You want people to meet or to have people meet you. You want something unexpected to happen. You want to be interested, stimulated, intrigued. You want to meet big names and young geniuses, to find new magazines and ones you haven’t seen for years.

The future of mags
Talking about a lot of different presentations, interviews, talks, panes, discussions about the making off, publishing, promoting and distribution of magazines. What is the future of the magazines? How can Digital means support your magazine?

Independent & impressing
Independent magazines as KasinoA4, Idn, Eye magazine, BabyBabyBaby, Liebling, Nuke, La Mas Bella en many other presented their publications in talks and expositions. In total there were 16 different exhibitions around town. The biggest and most impressing exposition was at the wonderful modern art museum Mudam, called BEYOND KIOSK - MODES OF MULTIPLICATION.

6000 to 20
This on-going project, initiated by German publisher and designer Christoph Keller, who founded the publishing company Revolver, is a travelling exhibition focusing on independent publishing in the fields of contemporary art, design and graphic design. It’s starting point is Kiosk, an expending archive, which gathers today over 6.000 publications – artists’ books, catalogues, magazines, videos, audio works – and which travelled to more than twenty institutions all over the world since 2001.

Storyboarding and Pecha Kucha
During the three days visitors could also engage in making a magazine about the colophon festival itself. Designers, writers, editors, photographers, illustrator developed together a storyboard and made a magazine. Further visitors could engage in portfolio markets where illustrators, designers and photographers could show there portfolio to a broader public. Also a Pecha Kuch Session was organised where 10 different people could show exciting and interesting projects.

From to cocktail to ...one day...
In the evening all the festival visitors met on the colophon parties to talk, to laugh, to network, to enjoy some nice cocktails and to celebrate the colophon vibe. For us as a young graphic design studio it was an inspiring trip. We learned a lot about magazine making, met nice people and who knows, one day we will publish our own alternative magazine...
